ALL SAVE GAMES DISAPPEARED?

I was playing in offline mode.  I stopped playing.  Steam said it had downloaded a client update and did I want to restart.  I went ahead and restarted steam.

 

Next time I try to play I notice it's not recognizing the controller.  Seems controller mode was switched off -- very odd.  Then I go to load a save game and I see that ALL MY SAVE GAMES ARE GONE.

 

I saw a post about disabling STEAM CLOUD and I went ahead and did that but no luck at all.  No save games. 

 

Questions:

 

#1) Is there any way to get my save files back?

 

#2) Is there any reason to play Don't Starve if you can randomly lose all progress from a glitch at any time?

And to answer your questions:

 

1. Nope. They belong to Maxwell now.

2. In theory, no, but this isn't supposed to happen. Maybe if you posted in the bug tracker, someone could help you figure out why this is happening.....

 

Also, it's always tricky business running Steam in offline mode.

After my steam client updated, I also had the same problem.

 

This is how I fixed my problem:

 

if you have never changed the settings.ini file before, do the following steps:

 

1. Find your original savegames:

 

your original steam savegames should be in:

    Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\{unique ID}\{219740}\remote\

 

you will (possibly) find the following files: boot_modindex, modindex, morgue, motd, profile, saveindex, survival_1, survival_2 etc.

 

survival_1 is an example of a slot 1 savegame.

 

   make a copy of this remote folder, just in case

 

2. Changing settings.ini

 

Goto the my documents folder and check if you can find a folder called Klei

 

Open DoNotStarve folder

 

There should be a settings.ini file

 

Open the file (for example using notepad) and change the following line:

 

DISABLECLOUD = false        

--->  change into     

DISABLECLOUD = true

 

Save the file and restart Steam client and run Don't starve.

 

3. Restoring your old saves

 

Your old saves are still not showing in the menu.

 

Make a new world (if your old savegame was in slot 1, use slot 1 again)

 

Create the world and exit this world normally (save and quit).

 

Quit the game.

 

Now here's the trick:

 

1. Go back to my documents\klei\DoNotStarve\save

 

2. Replace the newly created Survival_X file with your old Survival_X file

 

For example: replace the new Survival_1 file with your old Survival_1 file

 

Don't change or replace anything else!

 

Now restart the game, play, (don't be confused by the "1-1" numbers) and you're back

in your old world.

Thanks for the tip Hema!  This did the trick, with the added step of unlocking the console and unlocking Wickerbottom since my char progress got wiped out.  Strangely, it will let you load the save game with whatever character you want, and there was an odd display bug when loading the Wickerbottom save game with Maxwell.

But sadly, having lost faith in the integrity of the save system I'm now compulsively backing up my save and index files

Basically what we did was moving the old save games to my documents.

 

Fortunately you were able to unlock some lost characters with the console.
