[Linux] [howto] Mix of Steam and Klei versions

Recommended Posts

I bought the core of Don't Starve through the Humble Store, but bought Reign of Giants thru Steam while it was on sale. This would appear to result in a situation where I can only play the game with Steam closed if I don't want Reign of Giants, but actually that turns out not to be the case.

I'm on Linux so these instructions probably aren't of much use to most people but just in case:

  1. Install Don't Starve and the Reign of Giants DLC in Steam
  2. Download and extract the standalone version, then change to the directory you just extracted, called "dontstarve". This directory has the launcher script dontstarve.sh as well as a subdirectory "data".
  3. rm -r data
  4. ln -s ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/dont_starve/data

Updates to the data files now come through Steam. I think the standalone updater might still do *something* but from what I know of the way Steam works, it will erase any changes the standalone updater might make to the stuff in the data directory. This is probably fine, and anyway I can launch the game without Steam open this way.
