Anyone know what causes controller stick L ^ < > v to replace apostrophes?

A few mods I've downloaded have had an image of L up down left or right (controller controls) replacing apostrophes. o.O

 

For example: Dementor character. http://forums.kleientertainment.com/files/file/264-dementor-playable-character/

 

I press alt (to force inspect, don't know how to inspect otherwise...) and click the item if that has anything to do with it.
