Recently in one of my beta worlds, I decided to finally go out to sea and find the giant whirlpool leading to the sanctum, and by proxy, the vault. However, after spending roughly 5 days sailing across the ocean, I wasn't able to locate it at all. I wasn't sure if it spawned in the deep or calm parts of the ocean or to look out for specific landmarks like the yellow paint leading near the monkey island, so I spent a lot of my time just aimlessly exploring the ocean without any clue as to where I needed to go.

With this area being paramount to completing the shadow arc, it needs to have some type of way to locate it easier. I imagine there could a trail of boat debris leading out to the rough parts of the ocean, broken boards or sails, which would then lead the player towards the whirlpool. I feel like it wouldn't need the astral detector or some magical lunar item to find whirlpools in the ocean, as it'd be pretty natural to see some when boating. I dunno how they'll do it, I just hope Klei can give us a way enter the sanctum a lot faster.

From what I've experienced it spawns in the same icy area that frost jaw's arena spawns in (though it could just be multiple coincidences) and regardless i do agree that there should be a more obvious hint at where it has spawned

I assumed the same as well, happened to stumble upon in my Wes world in the main branch, but when doing the same as Wanda, no dice. I assumed the boat debris you see occasionally in the ocean would be a good hunt, but alas, no luck.

It should be generated not far from Lunar Island. Directly below Lunar Island is the Lunar Grotto, followed closely by the Archive, and the sanctum is located above the Archive. These connection relationships are fixed.
I think spawns whirlpool near lunar offshore islands is a good choice.

Waymark Compass would be appropriate if it is not spawned inside the Sanctum. To be clarified, I have no complaints on Compass' existing functions, but I have to say that it's weird that you can easily find the very item that solves the maze right inside the maze itself.

The only slight hint is that it spawns in rough (deep) ocean, which I'm even afraid to call it a hint, as even knowing this, and having a super speedy boat, and crabking bumpers, etc. it took me 20 days (a whole season) to find it and it was really painful.

I see point of it encouraging exploration, but it is finding a needle in the hay at this point. (and not trying to be that guy, but ocean is still just quite empty and lacking)

again, not trying to be that guy, but that is a bit too much straight to the point imo, and additionally, it's use is not just solving the maze, but to also find out that it is the only way to attract the light orbs in the maze, which you need in the final room. And I don't know any where appropriate outside of the sanctum.

My suggestion is to have the normal compass, be a hint, in a way that, the closer you get to the whirlpool, the more frequent it'd like glitch out and go haywire, due to whirlpool's magnetic interference let's say.

So the compass wouldn't lose any functionality; instead, the frequency of its erratic behavior would scale with proximity. For example, at 100 tiles away it might only glitch once every 10 seconds, while at 10 tiles away it could twitch or spin wildly once every second. Same logic as Divining rod, which funny enough the code for it's logic is still in DST.
