Pumking7
I think the holiday events are usually non-controversial, especially since they're often simple or plain and don't really offer much to the game where I'm sure many don't even check them out. If we're counting actual content updates its definitely Reap What You Sow I feel like this was the least controversial update in development and post-launch. I have rarely seen anything besides love for this update (myself included) despite it changing a core aspect of the gameplay up so much. Character reworks or skilltrees are always going to be controversial, I think many people worry about their favorite character or their playstyle might be tarnished. Its funny to see how people in the community clearly have favorites and push way more strongly for some characters than others, gives characters a personality in the fandom so to speak. Often content updates have an issue sometimes where I think due to how far away or inaccessible the content Klei often implements is, many don't really have opinions on it. Maybe I would call this "unintrusive" content updates for its nature, where the content itself has to be sought out. I feel like often these updates become controversial after being pushed out for launch as more time for them to stew and for the majority to reach the content. She Sells Seashells is a good example of this where the beta was pushed out rather quickly where Crab King and arguably Pearl needed more time to bake, and Crab King became a point of controversy for many years. Its been quite fun to see how fans can react to these updates though, for even at an updates most controversial it means the fans are ever more passionate about it, or maybe misguided who knows?
