It's possible, but I'd recommend looking into character anim files first. This tutorial covers the basics of making a modded character, though keep in mind that 90% of the work is just the art and animation

Once you've declared the Asset in your mod, you can test it by typing this into the console: ThePlayer.AnimState:SetBuild("yourbuild").

Keep in mind that if you use the same build name as a default Klei asset, you will overwrite it.

If you want to create a skin for Maxwell, that's also possible. You just need to find a third-party skin API that supports it. At that point, it’s mostly just a matter of ethics with Klei, but honestly, I haven't really seen anyone creating custom skins for the official characters yet.
