Overwhelming and confusing start

Hi, I just received this game as a Christmas gift.

I start the very first 'planet', my Duplicants appear in the world and I am instantly bombarded by an interface that resembles Microsoft Excel rather than a video game.

The very first warning I receive is "No Oxygen generator built" and am told to check the Oxygen tab [2]. So I click on that, and see that Oxygen Diffuser costs 200 Metal Ore.

One would think this should be a priority, then, right? I should be prioritizing the construction of this Oxygen Diffuser.

But no matter what I do, how much I dig through the soil etc., I can't seem to get enough of this mysterious "Metal ore" that is needed.

Is there any way how to simplify the first moments so that it's much clearer what I'm supposed to do?
