The Core Concept Currently, every character in Don't Starve Together begins their journey on the surface. I propose a character that completely flips the traditional gameplay loop by spawning directly in the Caves Portal. This character would treat the underground as their natural home and the surface as a hostile wasteland.

Unique Mechanics: The Inverted Survivor

  • Cave Spawn: Instead of the Surface Portal, this character starts at Underground Portal.

    • Inverse Sanity & Vision:

  • Comfort in Darkness: No sanity drain in total darkness. Charlie  does not attack them.

  • Photophobia: Direct sunlight or strong light sources cause rapid Sanity drain and a "Blinding" visual effect.

  • The Surface Struggle: During the day on the surface, the character’s vision is severely obscured, and they must seek shade or return underground to stay sane.

    • No "Minion" Mechanic: Unlike Webber, Wurt, or Maxwell, this character should not be a leader of an army. They are a solo survivor focusing on personal shadow, magical abilities, or high-tech/ancient crafting rather than commanding subordinates.

Potential Character Identities (Implementations) Here are a few ways this concept could be realized:

  • Option A: The Ancient Insect (Mant/Ancient one)

    • A descendant of the Ancient civilization found in the ruins or an "Mant" (similar to the Hamlet DLC).

    • Pros: High intelligence and affinity for Shadow Magic/Ancient structures.

    • Weakness: Vulnerability to Cold (insectoid trait), making Winter especially dangerous even underground.

    • The Antlion Connection: as long as you don't attack him, he will never trigger sinkholes or earthquakes against you, even if you don't provide tribute.New trades available

  • Option B: The Shadow Bat

    • A humanoid bat-like creature.

    • Special Vision: Uses Echolocation. Instead of normal sight, the player sees white sound waves rippling against walls and objects on a black background. This makes cave navigation (with many walls) easy, but surface navigation (open space) disorienting.

  • Option C The Human Miner — [Not Recommended]

One might suggest a human character (like a "Deep Miner"), but this is the weakest option.

  • The Problem: A human with a miner's hat is just a regular survivor who happens to be underground. It doesn't offer a unique gameplay loop. If you can play Wilson and just go down to the caves on Day 1, a "Miner" character adds nothing new. We need a character whose biology demands they stay in the dark.

Impact on the Game World This character would serve as a catalyst for expanding the Caves into a standalone dimension. Survival would depend on shadow resources rather than lunar ones. While seasonal bosses are currently surface-bound, introducing a cave-starting character would encourage the development of equivalent subterranean threats and seasonal content, making the Caves a complete ecosystem for year-round survival.
