Hello Klei Team,
My name is Jeff, and I am a totally blind player writing to respectfully request accessibility support for Don’t Starve Together.
Currently, the game does not offer screen reader compatibility, audio-based navigation, or spoken feedback for menus, inventory, and core gameplay information. Because of this, blind players are unfortunately unable to experience the game independently.
On PC, accessibility solutions already exist and are actively used in many applications and games. For example, NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a free, open-source screen reader widely adopted by blind users worldwide. Because its source code is open, it allows developers to study, integrate, or take inspiration from existing accessibility solutions without licensing barriers.
In addition, accessibility in video games has advanced significantly in recent years. Several modern games already include built-in screen readers, narrated menus, and audio cues to support blind and visually impaired players. These features demonstrate that accessibility in games is both achievable and impactful.
Based on gameplay videos and community content, Don’t Starve Together shows strong potential to become accessible through features such as:
•
Screen reader support for menus, settings, and inventory
•
Audio feedback for player status (health, hunger, sanity, temperature)
•
Spatial audio cues to indicate nearby objects, enemies, and interactable elements
•
Keyboard-based navigation with sound confirmation
Even partial accessibility would allow blind players to engage with the game and the community in meaningful ways.
Supporting accessibility would not only open Don’t Starve Together to a new audience of visually impaired players, but would also represent an important step forward for inclusion in gaming.
Thank you very much for your time, your work, and for considering accessibility as part of the future of Don’t Starve Together.
Kind regards.
