I don't see how someome could have seen that announcement and thought "of course I'll get a free skin for following the project and doing nothing else after. The free part could never mean that it has anything to do with the product I'm following."

I followed the project because of that text, thought it was gonna be a random drop like the daily gifts, something totally unimportant. I liked the idea of supporting them in a small way and getting something small in return. I wondered how would they track players that follow and players that don't, but I trusted Klei's side in the end. I'm not sad or mad or anything, but it was unclear. Made me participate in something I would normally ignore. That was the objective I guess.

People expected free skin for following because thats what was literally typed on that announcement. No extra text about backing campaign etc (unless of course there was some text you can see with UV light only). People expected GCU and Klei to be virtuous/honest and I do not see anything wrong with that.

Plus we already have free skins/spools thing going on for a while. Free drops, free points links, free things for simple actions like binding accounts from different platforms (like twitch). None of that requires you to buy some klei points decoder for 20 usd. Free skins for simple actions. Thats probably another reason people expected to get a free skin for just follow.

Just to be 100% here, I do not blame Klei in this instance. They can't control GCU's posts. Their name is on the box, so I feel that they would want to help take corrective actions to avoid brand harm.

The main reason I was trying to get Joe's attention is because their cooperation with GCU would be essential to correcting this violation of truth in advertising trade laws.

Again though, it's pretty difficult for the average consumer to separate Klei and GCU when Klei's name is on the box, and with the product being based on Klei's intellectual property.

I'm not clear on the analytics Kickstarter tracks. If they don't have access to the people that followed at the time of the promotion, they should not have promised a free gift for following. They still have an obligation to provide people like you, who followed for the free gift, what they promised. They could overcorrect to guarantee everyone who followed received their free gift, or send out a notification to people who followed with a link to a page that generated a code for the digital product. I didn't really know or care how they distribute tbh. It's their responsibility to figure it out.

Thank you for coming forward with this, I'm sorry you were mislead. I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you back the Kickstarter after they changed the terms?
