I am a long-time player of Don’t Starve Together and a big fan of the farming system. While I enjoy the current mechanics, I believe there is room to make farming deeper and more immersive, especially for players who like to focus on agriculture. I would like to share a gameplay idea inspired by Mendelian genetics.

1. Genetic Traits for Crops

Each crop could carry genetic traits represented by dominant and recessive alleles. Traits may include:

  • Growth Speed (fast vs. slow)

  • Yield (high vs. low)

  • Resistance (to drought, cold, etc.)

  • Quality (nutrition, buffs, or even debuffs)

Crops would inherit traits based on Mendelian probability:

  • Two “Aa” crops could produce seeds with a 25% chance of “AA” (dominant), 50% “Aa” (carrier), and 25% “aa” (recessive).

  • Over time, players could selectively breed crops for desired traits.

  • Crossbreeding different species could even create rare hybrid crops.

This system would make farming not only about food security but also about strategy, experimentation, and long-term planning.

2. Seed Pouch Improvements

To make seed management more immersive and convenient, a new Seed Pouch item could be introduced:

  • Separate Slots: Different genetic seeds stored in individual compartments.

  • Trait Icons: Small symbols (, 🍎, ❄️, etc.) to show main traits at a glance.

  • Decay Over Time: Seeds gradually lose viability, unless stored in ice boxes or preserved with special materials.

  • Mixed Planting: An option to sow multiple types at once, creating random results (like a farmer scattering seeds by hand).

  • Observation Notes: A small built-in record book that logs observed traits after planting, giving a sense of discovery.

The pouch could be styled in the game’s characteristic “rustic survival” design—perhaps a woven grass bag with wooden tags, or a bark box with a feather pen attached.
