200hp isn't a lot and the risk of losing everything to a single bad crash is so high that you have to be very cautious when steering your boat. Most of the time I dont even bother building masts and just row everywhere with a driftwood oar.

I think it would be nice that for every unique ship part you build on your boat it got a little bonus to its max hp, for example 25hp or 50hp, just so that the more you choose to invest in your boat the harder it will be to lose it. This would apply to:

Anchors, steering wheels, masts, winged sails, rudders, tin fishing bin, pinchin winch and both of the nautopilots.

The only bumpers I've used are the Crab King ones and none of them help when your boat is being shot at or has a leak from some other source.

Direct attacks on boats really become an issue with multiple Sea Weeds and with Crab King socketed with five or more Red Gems, however in my view, those are foes you shouldn’t be picking a fight with in the first place.

I think you could try the Archaic Boat, it has 400 max HP and some leak resilient.

I've used the archaic boat and it really is much better. Part of the motivation for the post was the desire to turn a regular boat into a psuedo archaic if you put the effort in rather than going treassure hunting and just hoping you get one.

Yes… exactly, now try playing on Xbox or PlayStation and identifying and repairing that leak without button controls interacting with something stupid, such as picking up the loose items on the deck.

Boating on a controller in the Shipwrecked DLC was so much more enjoyable, a simple D-pad press did things like raise masts.

But anyway as far as your bumpers problem goes you can first go find Pearl (kinda required to obtain pinch winch blueprint anyway) and after you do that… you can just randomly sail around dropping the winch into the ocean, the cluster of rocks you usually pull up, can be mined for seashells (no Pearl isn’t the only source) which can then be hammered into broken shells and turned into seashell bumper.

Thats one way… but you can also go to Moon Quay and kill the glowing crab thingys to obtain shells too. Jump on their heads Super Mario Style (this parts a joke obviously but they do drop shells!)

Shell bumpers are pretty good but last but not least before you can get shells, you can always just do kelp bumpers.

That's not random, there's several clusters around Pearl's island that you're supposed to trawl up as a task from her. You can see them beneath the surface around her island.
