I don’t remember downloading a mod.

That’s the part that still bugs me. I booted up Don’t Starve Together like I always do, just wanted to mess around in a winter world solo. Nothing fancy—just survival, cold, and that familiar quiet loneliness.

Except… something was wrong with the character select screen.

All the portraits were static—except one. WX-78. His model was twitching. Not the usual idle animation—this was broken, like a corrupted gif looping too fast. The face was… gone. Just smooth metal. Blank.

I thought it was just a glitch and selected him anyway.

The game loaded, but instead of spawning near the Florid Postern, I appeared in a forest I didn’t recognize. Everything was tinted blue. The trees were frozen solid, the ground covered in ice-cracked marble, and the ambient sounds were gone. No music. No wind. Just silence.

And then I saw it: a path lined with strange statues—stone pigs, twisted effigies—and at the end, a gate. Black iron, shaped like cathedral spires, wrapped in vines and gears that pulsed like veins.

Standing in front of it was me.

Another WX-78.

Faceless.

Perfectly still.

I moved forward slowly. The WX copy didn’t react. I tried to open the console to see if this was some weird debug version, but it wouldn’t open. Neither would the menu. The screen began to frost at the edges, like the cold was creeping in from outside the monitor.

When I got close enough, a sound triggered—something like a reversed music box. And then the other WX moved.

He turned his head—not toward my character.

Toward me.

Then the game spoke, in a voice I’ve never heard in Don’t Starve.

“YOUR IDENTITY IS OBSOLETE.”

The other WX clipped backward into the gate and vanished. The gate itself cracked open without a sound. I couldn’t stop my character—he walked through on his own.

Cut to black.

No loading. No crash. Just darkness.

Then the screen lit up again, but I wasn’t in the game anymore.

It was an image.

The exact image you’re looking at now.

I tried to exit, but my cursor vanished. My monitor started flickering. And then I saw something in the reflection of the screen—behind me.

A silhouette.

Short. Round head. No face.

Like WX.

I yanked the power cable.

The next day, my game files were corrupted. But a new folder had appeared on my desktop:

"FAC3L3SS"

Inside? Just the same image. No metadata. No file path. Just frozen_gate.png.

Every night since then, I hear mechanical ticking from my speakers—always around 3:33 AM.

Sometimes it sounds like footsteps.

I mean, as long as it is strictly advertised as AI, it's not bad. If every post was AI then I'd probably have a different opinion, but just the occasional "Hey look at this thing that AI was able to make" is fine.

it can be AI, it can be a 70 year old, a child, whatever, but that was genuinely a good story. Very spooky.

This is just a fun use for Ai. Instantly going “Oh it’s Ai, horrible” is bad. I don’t like it but this seems fine

i just dont like the use of that kind of ai because it usualy takes from real people...and given i do draw from time to time i just....dont feel comfortable with these kinds of things
