Unable to play 2 player split screen

Hello, im trying to set this up but am having issues.  It sounds like it should be possible based on:

How do we play in split screen?
Players will need to have 2 controllers configured via the “Controllers” option in the Switch Home Menu. Player 1 then needs to start up the game and advance to the Main Menu. On the Main Menu, Player 2 presses the corresponding button on their controller [+] to join, and then they can play together split-screen in either online or offline worlds.

 

I am following this and it doesn't work.  I have read a bit more into it and nothing works or really makes sense.  This switch is my primary account switch.

 

I am clicking the (+) in every menu on the 2nd controller.  Its for sure connected because I can hit the home key and it takes me back to switch home.

I see no options for setting up local vs online game even.

 

Would love to play this game coop with my girlfriend.

I'm so sorry this if this is super late, but, there are a few possible problems. First off, make sure that the second player controller is showing as player two on the joy-con, or whatever it is you are using. If you are pressing plus on the first player controller that'll do nothing. What you should see, if it's working, is on the top right of the screen it'll say player 1 and player 2. If that works it'll ask which Nintendo switch user is playing as player two, fill that out, make a new world, and boom. Hopefully it'll all work out. 

If that doesn't work I have no clue what the problem would be, but I'd be happy to try and help out if you haven't already sorted it out.
