Idea to fix webber spider balance (and maybe fix lag to an extent?). Housing space.

What if he had a limited number of housing space of spiders he can bring (like clash of clans) and each spider had different housing spaces?

Normal spiders would have 1 housing space.

Warriors, dwellers, cave, and strider have 2 housing space.

Shattered spiders have 2.5 housing space. (Lunar mobs are meant to be abnormal so i thought an abnormal number would be interesting to math around and make them less outclassed by spitters.)

Spitter spiders have 3 housing space.

Nurse spiders have 4 housing space. 

 

In Webber's skilltree, he can unlock stronger spiders, some taking more than 4 housing space which will be a good option for players who want fewer minions for more control and less lag. The option to spam spiders is still there to use, but had a more interesting balance than spamming the strongest spider (spitters). It also allows for better balance of spiders.

Skills could increase his housing space, while others could focus on stronger spiders per space used.

Sounds like you want klei to rework webber instead of a skill tree, I think limiting Webber is a bad idea. Wurt can use  lot of merms without lag and its true that wurt's merms are better quality followers than spiders thats the reason she doesnt need as many merms. Wurt is about quality strong followers while webber is the opposite, he is more about quantity, Big amount of weak followers. i dont want webber to be the same as wurt they are not the same.

But to be honest i liked your idea, what about a middle point? What if webber can still use as many normal spiders as he can ignoring the skill tree, but with the skill tree he gets the ability to befriend spider queens and with that he learns to use spider queens as big containers of spider armies that webber can use only if there are enough... lets call it "food ration spaces" and if you have for example 30 spiter spiders and 10 nurses you are using all your "food rations spaces" but you can still have 3 spider queens to use like a storage of spiders and these 3 queens each of them have 30 spiters and 10 nurses inside them, but you can only hatch the big cocoon that is the queen if your first wave of spiders is wiped out, that way webber can use as many spider as he can but he have to wait to be more like swarm waves character, he should put spider queens out of danger so when the first wave of spider of the swarm is killed by any means he can get back all the spiders he lost in seconds and if the spider queen is killed with the army inside of her they just disapear.

yeah a think something like that could help with the lag and improve webber ability to overwhelm enemies with the swarm  using waves of spiders instead of having 1000 spiders at the same time. Replenish the number faster instead of making them 1000 could be the key i think.

I'm glad someone else is thinking about this too. I play this game on ps5 and tbh, the game gets very laggy at dusk when a player walks through a dark forest with many spiders or spider quarry. Usually ends up with people trying to avoid that area entirely. 

In pub servers I see less webber now but I imagine after his tree he'll be popular again like he was before skill trees and the worst part about playing with a webber is he is rewarded for lagging the heck out of the server, using many followers, basing in spider quarry, constantly having many spiders loaded in.

I think klei needs to account for this in the skill tree, spider buffs but having a limit to how many buffed spiders you can have is a good idea imo. The servers already crash a decent amount without the strain of having 50 spiders loaded in at all times.

Idk if this is a problem on PC but on console the game gets very laggy when lots of spiders are loaded at once. I fear for the webber skill tree.

At least to make DST have some feature of RTS is sounds more easier than rework/fix the mobs code to avoid their latency... But I don't think this is a good idea. Yea this might be balance and achievable but this is a bit boring for me.

StarCraft already died, don't bring a dead game feature into DST plz, it seems a bit unlucky. (Joke here)

Maybe it's OK remove those from Webber's spider?

Seems this could work if the latency reason is based on these. Just let Webber could decorate every type of spider nests, to ensure that spiders belong a decorated nest would stop searching foods or something.

I believe Wurt's combat direction was a big mistake so i just pretend she doesnt exist and dont compare.

You have the option between the two. Also this is kinda false now because of nurses.

He needs one because his spider balance is flawed.
