When did this game become a buggy mess?

Recommended Posts

I played this game 2017-2018 and came back recently. I remember that the bugs we encountered back then were more of the type of fun glitches you could abuse for your benefit (such as deconstructing airlock making solid tile). I am glad those are still here, but this experience now is something else. These take away from the game.

Here are some of the major bugs I've encountered so far in my only 3-4 days of playing.

On load
-Outhouse cleaning is cancelled. If you manually gave the order before it was full you have to manually re-issue it. Job doesn't lose progress though.
-Resources can get deleted from the game forever. (I noticed this because I started arboria with a single hatch and lost the first egg)

Other
-After completing a manual outhouse clean it can say "x visits left" where x was the number before it was cleaned, and the arrow also points where it did. It is only visual and fixes itself after a dupe visit, but it confused and stressed the crap out of me because a dupe was close to "overflowing".
-Critters next to a door can teleport across rooms to the same side of the opposite door and thus get out. This has happened thrice already (2 pips, 1 hatch). Only wild critters seem to have this ability unless it's coincidence.
-Pips try to get a seed in water but cant enter water so gets stuck in an infinite loop until you save and reload.
-If you cancel a deconstruction job the moment it is finished your dupe can get stuck in place until you save and reload.
-When using the new disconnect tool on a flowing pipe; contents can jump to adjacent pipes instead of staying in whatever tile they are in.
-I had debug tools enabled since last time I played 2018, but instant dig was automatically on at start of new game no matter what i did, so I could not play any game without cheats. Had to remove debug entirely. Luckily sandbox tools wok fine as replacement.

Not bug but major new annoyance:
-Supplying research stations count as research for priority, meaning your anemic researcher with noodle arms will quit using his brain to crawl to the pump for 10kg of water and there's nothing you can do to stop it other than temporarily ban him from researching. To fix; either count as supplying (because it is literally supplying) or take an average of the two priorities.
-Deodorizers release small amounts of unconverted polluted oxygen when deconstructed. This is not new but wasn't a problem in 2018 since po2 did nothing bad. Now it is bad, so the remaining po2 should be bottled when deconstructed. Not every machine need to have content bottled for you, but deodorizers are the intended way to remove po2, so they should be able to accomplish that task.

I assume everyone on this forum has been here for the journey. How are you experiencing the bugs of this game?
I do like many of the new additions, including free new content, but it seems that content came with a caveat.

To answer your question: 2023. At least, that's my best guess having played the game regularly since 2020.
That's when I started to notice that even bugs that had a very noticeable impact on the game were going unfixed, and that performance was getting worse even on high-end hardware. There was also a major rewrite of the base-game code as a result of the Spaced Out! DLC (released 2021), along with many free content updates, each of which introduced more bugs and generally worsened performance.
The Frosty Planet Pack DLC didn't help much when it came out, but since then, it does look like the devs have been taking these issues seriously and are slowly (it's a small team) working their way through fixing them; they've got a long way to go.
