Creating a custom skin for Pets

Hello Everyone! I'm an artist that's been playing Don't Starve since I was in Middle school. I really like the pets in this game, especially the Friendly Peeper. I noticed that he doesn't have any skins like the rest of the critters. I know why he doesn't, but I'd like to create some for myself anyway. Can anyone point me to the right tutorials or direct me on how to get a custom skin and animations for him into the game? Much appreciated.
