Clarifying Language Support on Klei's Forums: A Possible Misunderstanding

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I hope this post isn't off-topic, but I feel it's important given the ongoing debates surrounding the recent beta update. I want to address a potential misunderstanding about whether Chinese (or any other language) is supported on Klei's forums. This issue seems to have contributed to some confusion and frustration within the community.

Facts:

  1. Bilibili Post:

    玩家常见问题指引
This is a pinned post on Klei Entertainment's official Bilibili channel, titled "玩家常见问题指引" ("Frequently Asked Questions by Players"). It includes the following line:

    Quote

    如果遇到了游戏内的bug或者对游戏有任何意见以及建议(支持中文):
    https://forums.kleientertainment.com/?continueFlag=f58c4b1fd5ec23035a52c59831a152e2

The translation reads: "If you encounter bugs in the game or have any opinions and suggestions (Chinese supported): [Forum link]."
This statement, widely circulated within the Chinese community, has led many players to believe they are encouraged to post on the official forums—potentially even in Chinese.

  2. Klei Forum Guidelines:

    Klei Forum Guidelines
On the other hand, the official forum guidelines clearly state:

    Quote

Language: Users are expected to communicate in English while using our services and support. Services include things like our websites, social media pages, support systems, blogs and forums. We're an English based company, and as much as we'd love to help you in Swahili, Klingon or some other language, we work best in English. In the event that additional language services are deemed appropriate, these services will be made available when Klei Entertainment has the ability to offer support in these languages.

This indicates that all non-English languages, including Chinese, are not supported.

The Discrepancy:

This discrepancy between the Bilibili post and the forum guidelines has likely caused misunderstandings among Chinese players regarding their ability to provide feedback in their native language. While the Bilibili post suggests Chinese is supported, the forum guidelines say otherwise. This inconsistency could leave players feeling unsure about how and where to express their feedback effectively.

My Thoughts:

Personally, I think adhering to English as the sole language on the forums is the most practical approach. The player base is global, and having a single language ensures that discussions remain clear and accessible to everyone. Allowing posts in multiple languages could fragment threads, making discussions harder to follow and complicating responses for moderators and maintainers.

That said, this doesn't mean Chinese or other non-English-speaking players shouldn't have their voices heard. Establishing clear and consistent communication channels—be it through dedicated translators, localized platforms, or other means—could help address these challenges while ensuring all players feel valued and included.

A Call for Clarity:

I believe Klei could benefit from clarifying this apparent contradiction to help avoid further confusion. Whether that's by updating the Bilibili post to align with the forum guidelines or by creating alternative channels for non-English feedback, addressing this issue would greatly enhance communication and inclusivity.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope this post contributes to a better understanding and more productive discussions moving forward.

I actually believe that common languages including Chinese, Russian, French, Spanish, etc. can be used.
Anyone can use AI to translate languages. However, translating between Chinese and English only requires one process, and translating from one language to English and then to another will be more complex. If you skip English, it can actually facilitate communication between people from two non English speaking countries.
