It feels like the base game was designed not around combat, but combat keeps being the main focus with more and more updates. I don't think that is completely true tho. Combat can be more than just hold F even tho it can be just that too And u can argue that simple = better, but then you going outta your way to farm more resources and heal so u can hold F speaks volumes about rewarding kite. My intention here however is to point some folks might missing the point that is having fun. With fighting too. I know that we all want it to be "more" but as soon u have to click one more button we will have a thread saying that is starting to be too complicated It's like it has no way to win So in that case I say simple is better because then you can elaborate it yourself. How? I mean we have different chars that allow that but also the way you perform. I use ice staves a lot. With any character. I rather kite and sometimes do use snurtle shell armor to parry instead. And like all of this is good but people like "not me having to go outta my way to make it more complicated" Welp I'm having a blast And if Klei do elaborate more in that regard, same reactions In the other side I would say that magic could be more important in battles and it might offer a solution for this so everyone finds their way Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/161823-everybody-is-a-combat-character/page/2/#findComment-1769274 Share on other sites

You have movement keys and "attack". That's it. Yea you have more elaborate mechanics like animation cancelling which is possible in most situations but not all. Weapons don't behave differently from "swing" there is the exception of the Boomerang which requires you to catch it. A Dark Sword, Hambat, Brightshade Sword, Axe, Wanda's Watch, Walter Slingshot, etc all just have one action. Nothing differentiates them or makes them mechanically different just "This one does more damage" or "This one has a chance to do extra damage" or "This but range". I am totally fine with this combat system in Don't Starve because the focus isn't combat. However the combat is becoming more of a focus in this game. Wigfrid's Spear (while I hate it is locked by a skill tree) is an example of adding something new to enhance the one action that weapons have which is awesome if we are trying to push DST to be a combat focused game. Hope that makes sense. Because no one should feel miserable while everyone is fighting a boss, and to encourage team play that takes advantage of each character's combat skills. I fully agree on this, and it is the reason why I think Wilson's skill tree needs some adjustment on it, to become more than a "swap character" for alchemy skills. woxd
I think that concentrating on putting combat options and combat content in a game where the combat is not the best, is not a good idea... idk, I think we'll get to a point where the seasonal bosses will be nothing more than a joke, the characters evolve too much and the old bosses aren't ready for that Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/161823-everybody-is-a-combat-character/page/2/#findComment-1769584 Share on other sites

( this was why things like bee mines, tooth traps, and mob vs mob violence is a thing ). I liked outsmarting deerclops with treeguards to kill him. It was cool to try save up tree guards for him. (Though, he isnt as hard or resource draining anymore for a player like me with new buffs) Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/161823-everybody-is-a-combat-character/page/2/#findComment-1769604 Share on other sites
Malfario
I mean, one of the biggest problems before the skilltree was that there were characters that werent balanced with combat in mind. Combat being a crucial part of the game progression and game loop makes it so characters without any combat ability feel lacking, which is one of the biggest reasons for the "swap character phenomenon". Making the player understand the actual viable combat options as the default and only changing character when absolutly needed. I also feel the sentiment that the skilltrees should be more than combat, willow probably being the best example of how combat focused skilltrees can feel a bit off. But lets not forget its probably one of the most important things to make characters, that directly werent viable for combat, viable and interesting on that department. Also devs said they plan on expanding walter skilltree, most probably post christmas break, so we will probably get putside combat stuff.
