A casual player's take on the recent updates.

Recommended Posts

To begin with my qualifications of my views, I have over 1000 hours on this game, that I have gotten since this game released, and have only survived a full year once. This will likely set me apart as unexperienced with the entirety of the new endgame, and generally bad at the game. Even in terms of the old endgame, I only crafted at the ruins twice, and only fought the ancient guardian once, much less Fuelweaver.

To get the complaining out of the way, My largest issues with the recent set of updates are, first and foremost the ceaseless reworks of characters. While I understand some character need tweaks both large and small even after the the first set, it feels like too much at this point. Secondly the new updates feel too combat focused. It may be because I am not good at the game, but it feels like most of the new challenges come from combat rather then any other mechanic, for the bit I am most familiar with, the monkey raids feel bad, they feel punishingly difficult to handle compared to almost everything else on the ocean. I also feel like the amount of odd interactions are declining a bit. Marotters for instance feel a little empty. I wish to be able to bribe one to fish for me, or something along those lines. Finally, for a minor compliant, the sawhorse is too hard to get. In theory it is perfect for decorating base, but how to obtain it makes it near impossible to get for casual players like myself. I want it, but the only time I got it is by cheating it in.

For what I do like, I enjoy the new setpieces, especially encountering the scrapyard. I haven't gotten far enough for any of the larger interactions, but being able to dig through it for usually some trash is really fun. The stage setpiece is also really fun to encounter. The costumes are nice and it is fun messing about with them, even if they don't help anything, and I would probably wear them more if they didn't take up slots I need for a backpack and helmet. Staying afloat was also my favourite update in a while. It added much needed depth the ocean, where it feels closer to how expansive the game was near the start of the updates. While I haven't gotten one yet, I really like the idea behind the archaic boat having a chest and more durability is quite nice, and the passing monkey ships with treasure chests are fun to go after, although I haven't survived going after them even once. The Wurt skill tree is also fairly fun, I don't have much to say about it though. The great depths worm is fairly cool. I've only seen it once and also died to it, but it seems like a cool boss fight. I enjoy the theming of teaming up with a side for the updates, and the unique motifs of each faction. There is quite a bit to enjoy, and the rate of updates seem to match some of the slower years of this game, which makes it odd for such a common compliant.

For my wish list for the game -

For my ocean related wants. I want ocean fishing to be a bit faster, in its current state, without the mass catching items, it feels way to slow compared to other food gathering methods, making it feel less worthwhile, which sucks as it is a neat mechanic. I want more environmental hazards to the ocean, things beyond mobs that are threats. I want boat combat to be tweaked, as right now, it feels more of a task of tanking rather then regular combat. I want more varied fish types with unique drops or uses.

I want more of the new endgame stuff to have bits apply to early game, as I feel like I am missing out on quite a bit. Although depths of duplicity seems to match this desire fairly well, which I like.

I am mostly interested in the ocean honestly, I keep dying there.
