Draggofroot Posted November 28, 2024 Share Posted November 28, 2024 Klei is a company of around only 50 workers (according to their LinkedIn), and Klei have been working on other games as well as DST so their workforce is probably very limited. And yet DST gets updates equal to, or even bigger than Minecraft's updates imo and more frequently (like 2-3 a year). So I think Klei is going above and beyond for each update and I applaud them for it. These three recent skill trees probably took a while for them to come up with ideas for, program, and make sprites for and from what I've seen, the community sees them positively. They're doing their best and their best is pretty good. It actually puts a lot of extra strain on the company. Having tighter smaller crews is arguably more important and healthier for company's own benefit and quality of final product than having comically bloated ubisoft-sized staff teams that just has to pump out uninspired soulless slop every year just to keep company barely functioning or else people will get thrown out on the streets bare ass naked. Then…Why would klei spend valuable human resource and money on developing and running more new games at the same time instead of just focus on games that profit more and consider new games when they has got enough money and men? They arguably the best indie-esc developer out there with their games releasing with stellar artwork, stories and gameplay. You can see actual soul was put into their projects. DST is still their "main" game with probably most amount of devs designated to. I applaud them for actually branching out and still trying new things. Quit that spoiled entitled kid mentality "oh well screw other games! I want DST updates every week! They gotta be super polished and add tons of content!", it baffles me. Well no one asked them to work only on DST 24/7 every day of the year. Anycase, isn't it the usual strategy to focus on the current earning projects to support the finance and try new projects after they've earned enough money for trys that may fail or lose money? I know "dont put all the eggs in one basket", but klei looks like have been too eager in creating new baskets. There are 4 new games that either already released or in developing during the last two years as I know, and maybe there's more. Considering they're already running DST and Oxygen Not Included (well, no one cares for DS anyway), it would take considerable heavy work to develop and run all these, especially with such a small group klei has. So I think the confusion remains, and possibly turn into two. Klei is small, I get it, but... if they lack money, why dont they focus on profiting projects first? If they dont, why dont they make themselves bigger so that they can ease the work? Let's not forget there will be a mobile port for DST on Netflix Games. Like sure, Netflix is sponsoring the project but the fact that it's on Netflix Games itself already bring some problems. Would the share from monthly subscriptions people pay to play the port can help Klei to support themselves? Who knows. They never stated they "lack the money" i think ever. After Tencent they probably don't even need to care about money so they just branch out creating different games. I actually remember how someone at Klei even mentioned that they don't want to be just "Don't Starve" company but instead have different original IPs. And again, hiring more devs doesn't usually resolve anything especially when we are talking about close-knitted indie game devs with certain views and ideas they want to create. Look no further, Risk of Rain 2. Entire dedicated branch of workers (probably more than 10) from Gearbox are struggling to keep up with quality standard made by 4-man company consisting of 2 programmers, 1 artist and 1 janitor. So because a specific character doesn't have native AOE damage for this specific enemy, the entire enemy's mechanic should be taken out? There's several ways to get Rictus out of his shadow form. Just make Wilson be able to do everything. This debate over needing AOE to reveal a specific optional enemy being unfair is made trivial considering you have a ton of ways to circumvent the issue. If it bothers you so much you can literally change your character specifically for one with AOE if you need to. It's insane that this is even a debate. If you knew what kind of company Tencent is, you wouldn't think Klei is not "missing the money" anymore. In China, even children know that Tencent is a crazy company that goes to any lengths to make money. I can't think of any reason why Klei chose to cooperate with Tencent besides making money.
