Ancient Key went poof

So, I've got a problem with a missing Ancient Key. My friends and I went to set up the Fuelweaver fight, only to realize the key was gone. We had left the key near the sinkhole that leads to our base, but it has since vanished. We've even checked the map with a medallion in hand, and still no luck. Is it at all possible that the Great Depths Worm could have eaten the key? An ideas or suggestions would be great.
