I interpret each update as being the result of Charlie’s machinations and meddling. 
 

Generally, everything (not literally everything) in the constant is created by either Maxwell or Charlie, so each time something new is added; it’s because Charlie had a fun idea and created it for her world.

I think charlie found dreadstone or was trying to figure something with AFW. 

Then Nightmare werepig show up infused with pure horror. Charlie notice this and tramp him and begin "testing"

The rifts maybe are a consequence of Charlie's doing.

I mean, we know that the Rifts were created because of Charlie's doing. She repaired the Ancient Portal, which made "Them" come back a bit, opening otherworldly shadow rifts inside the caves.
