Opinion about new UPDATE

The new update has been released, and I’d like to share my thoughts on each aspect of it. Also, I’d love to hear the opinions of other players who have tried the update or can compare it with the beta version.

The cave bridge kit for crossing chasms is definitely one of the most useful things to make cave exploration more exciting. Imagine being like Indiana Jones, not looking for easy ways around but setting up rope bridges across a chasm. It even sounds thrilling!

The new mob, Rictus, is what we truly needed in terms of a “hidden threat.” It also resembles the Cheshire Cat, as the developers teased during beta, and as an animator, I appreciate seeing new steps in mob animation. Rictus has unusual behavior that will take some getting used to, but now I’m looking forward to more such ideas from Klei!

The Great Depths Worm is absolutely the “lightbulb on the cake” of this update! It feels like something I’ve been waiting for a long time! I’ll definitely be battling this worm again since the fight is very engaging, and I’ve already tested it in the beta. I recommend fighting it at least once in wooden armor and with primitive weapons.

The Ickers are a very peculiar mob, but we’ll get used to them. I like all the features of this new threat and what we can do with it. I hope that Ickers get some visual variations because right now they all look identical, which affects the overall design. It’s not easy to implement changes like this, but I trust the developers, artists, and animators can pull it off.

Mimics and chests in labyrinths and other locations are hilarious. It’s something you don’t expect, like Wilson, Wes, and Wortox in the new short! I hope mimics get more development and can mimic structures—how cool would that be? They have way more potential than what we got in this update. Also, I saw a forum suggestion that mimics should appear before players open a chest. I think it’d be great, but with a minimal spawn chance, just to tease new players a bit.

The Bunny King and everything related to him is my new love in terms of design. I think it looks awesome, and I’m glad we finally got a rabbit-nest-hat. Thanks so much for that! Rabbits are an essential part of DST’s world, so I hope we get more interactions with the Bunny King in the future.

Now, let’s talk about the new items crafted on the Shadow Altar. The new Beefalo Saddle is decent. It’s great that Beefalo now has a planar design related to shadow allegiance. The Shadow Bell is my top item related to Beefalo. Unfortunately, I lose my Beefalo often in battles or due to bees and lightbulbs, so this bell gives me a reason to tame them again. Thanks!

The new axe-weapon made me reconsider my allegiance to the shadow side. Until now, I used only equipment made of moonbulbs, occasionally using the Reaper’s Scythe to harvest a ton of reeds. But now, I’m likely to switch my allegiance to the nightmares! The new boomerang is quite intriguing too. I’m glad it’s a boomerang and not just darts. I’m eager to test it with Varbiss’ armor. If anyone has already tried it, please share your results.

The Icker preserving kit is one of the most interesting things for me. I’m excited to try it and figure out when and where it’s best to use it. If you’ve already tested it and found any interesting uses, let me know! But the design is definitely something I like.

The circular saw upgrade was unexpected but awesome! I’m not into megabases in DST, but I do enjoy decorating with flowers and furniture even at the starter base. Thanks for adding stone furniture—it looks cheap and tough! However, I think it would be cool if the saw upgrade wasn’t tied to moon glass alone. How about an option to use dreadstone for creating a shadow-themed sawblade instead? But even as it stands now, the saw upgrade is impressive. I also like that it has its own crafting tab now. One request though—please add stone doors/gates, stone signs, and stone pointers in a future update. I saw this suggestion on the forum, and it would help players when wooden gates burn in a stone wall, which isn’t great. The same goes for scaly chests and wooden signs near them.

A special mention to the cinematic. I anticipate new animations more than the actual updates! Finally, we saw Wortox in his element of survival with the classic survivors, and it warmed my heart. As always, the animation was top-notch. I’m thrilled that the chasms were shown in the caves during the short. I thought they were deliberately ignored in the animations, with only cave walls and tunnels being drawn. But with the spelunker bridges now in the game, I’m glad the chasms made it into the animation!

The new skin set is mind-blowing. I’ve never seen so many skins in one pack. Thank you to the artists for all your hard work! (Off to buy all the skins :) ). I’m especially happy with the skins for the Grotto Squid, Butterflies, Artifacts, Mannequins, and Bernie! It’s time for all of us to spruce up our bases!

The Twitch drop is quite cool. I like the Rose Collection, although I feel that the hibernation vest doesn’t quite fit the theme. Still, I’ll get the Twitch drop, and maybe my opinion will change when I have the skin in-game.

The succulent plant pot skin is one of my favorite things. I love decorating my base with succulents, and it’s great to finally have more variety!

As for the developers’ question about future updates and skill trees, I’m confident it will be Wendy and Walter. Yes, yes, I know most players are waiting for Webber and Wanda, but let’s be realistic. Wilson was the first in everything, and we should respect his skill tree (or at least not pay too much attention to it). Wolfgang, Wormwood, and Woodie were the ambassadors of skill trees because their update was a big deal. Then skill trees started to be released in pairs, and I noticed a pattern. In each pair, one character is less relevant in terms of new content and has outdated mechanics, while the other is extremely popular. With Wigfrid and Willow, the issue was Willow, and the update did wonders for her, while Wigfrid was the popular choice (not everyone was happy with her skill tree, though). Then we had Wurt and Winona—Wurt is popular, and Winona, despite her charm, was outdated, which is why we got the updates we got. Now I think Wendy, one of the most popular characters for beginner players, and Walter, who’s really been struggling in the game for over a year, will be next. But it’s possible we’ll only get one of them in the upcoming update.

Thank you so much for this surprise update (which fits its theme and content perfectly). Good luck to all the players, and let’s get ready for Halloween mode!

There are a lot of cool things in the update. I don't understand the more obscure additions that I'm pretty sure people are just using a guide to learn about. I'm expecting we'll one day get the questline for the shadow side tweaked a bit and then things will make more sense. I hear a lot of praise for the rabbit king but haven't heard people discussing the rabid king.
