Adventure mode chess reference?

Recommended Posts

Chess pieces are represented by the different characters in Don't Starve. The king is Maxwell, the queen is Charlie, the rooks, bishops, and knights are all represented by their mechanical clockwork pieces. The pawn is represented by the character that the player controls.

One thing I noticed today is that there are 5 chapters to the adventure mode. In chess, 5 moves is the minimum amount a pawn needs to take to reach the other side of the board and when that happens the pawn can promote to another piece. In the game this is represented by the player character taking the place of Maxwell on the nightmare throne, effectively "promoting" to king.

I just thought this was interesting and it may just be a coincidence and not a deliberate decision, but would like to hear if anyone else has any thoughts on the matter.

(I did not mean to derail but that's a nice detail I will keep in mind next time I play adventure mode I suppose.

Though still I actually /wish/ that Maxwell would have stayed to represent chess while I would have wanted Charlie to represent draughts as a change, though of course that would have taken away the different chesspieces symbolism...

Mainly because I like how in my language you call the draughts game "Dame". I had actually expected the "game" to change to a different board game, when I saw Charlie to change the aesthetic of the old portal to the floral postern. But then...not sure how it could have been implented, so after all it's maybe good they stayed with Chess and its symbols.)
