Yeah dev mode is still a thing, recently it kinda breaks save files though, and can cause errors or silent crashes if you have incompatible save files i think, you should try backing up your saves (AppData/Roaming/Klei) and move/delete the saves folder, then try starting the game with dev mode on again, that fixed it for me.
