It's Maxwell, burned into a wooden canvas \o/

( I don't really like how this turned out....but I have put too much time into it...maybe I will like my next attempts better. Probably drawing on a normal paper canvas next time...) (right now I am so angry at myself for posting this here. I should have at least tried to make a second version.....but..., maybe it will help me to find inspiration for practicing some more.)

Maxwellpyrographicedited.jpg.81df44ec65c61e93d3bece7fa8891fc0.jpg

before anyone asks:

a) I have never burned a human figure on wood before, so for my first attempt at someone that isn't a cartoony sheep or goat this is ok. I just wish I had used a less dark shade for the eye-area.

b) this is indeed my standard way of drawing characters who are rather gaunt and have a chin + nose in Maxwell's shape, I'm still trying to figure out how to put more variation into it....(this is in case someone recognizes my art style. I am currently not uploading any art on my deviantart / tumblr but I felt like sharing this here...to distract my mind.) (I suppose I was so tired I didn't even notice the mistake I made in drawing his hairstyle until now?)

c) I think Maxwell is in his 50s + my art style puts emphasis on exeggerated features (I don't care if he's maybe a different age, I tend to value my inspiration over canon.)

c) PUT ON YOUR GLASSES! [ If the Codex Umbra didn't heal his fragil health it shouldn't have healed his eye sight either : ) I am supposed to wear glasses for looking into the distance too, and have not worn them for many years, which didn't do me good, so I try to help Maxwell not do the same mistake, plus I like people with glasses actually wearing them : P ]

A failed masterpiece from my pov since I usually don't experience such mistakes as accidently burning pieces of my pyrography in a too dark shade, like it happened with Maxwell's eye-area over here, but then, it was the first time using the pyrography technique for a human character in my style so I'd say you are right, it is a small masterpiece in its own way. (I just hope my next try on character-pyrography will turn out better when it comes to shading :) )

I have finally decided for a BASIC character design for my custom character Maxwell. [I think this should belong in this thread, since it is also an attempt on Don't Starve art....I haven't been using my wacom tablet in some YEARS so I will probably redraw the sprites a bit when I am done with most of my mod's work.] (His RIDICULOUS clothes are NEEDED to camouflage dismembered body parts when he does the standard animations. I may change his clothes a bit as soon as I have finished working on adjusting some animations for him.) Also this is tinymaxwell, Wilson, Maxwellnpc [that's his prefab's name], Charlie and statuemaxwell for comparison. Again: This is probably not the final appearance, but so far it is the one I can continue to work with. Edit: I know his head is still GIANT compared to statuemaxwell but this was the best option that still fitted with the standard animations. For some reason the colours look extremly off in the game. I actually used the tool to pick colours directly from his NPC version from the DS wiki. I hope I can fix this at the end.)

And once again: Maxwell SHOULD wear his glasses!

I will reduce my Maxwell's height a bit when I am done with most of the work as I just noticed it's not really in line with statuemaxwell's height yet.

Or maybe I may do a slightly new approach and also reduce statuemaxwell's and Charlie's prefab spawning sizes a tiny bit? (if this is possible?) To make them look less out of place compared to the non-long-limped characters? (similar to how Maxwell looks tall but not tree-guard like tall in the encore animation video)

IF I go this route of adjusting both statuemaxwell and Charlie, then I would like to MAYBE if I find the nerves necessary, I would also love to adjust Wolfgang's proportions to be more in line with his non-ingame art proportions (at least when mighty?) Although in the end I fear I can't do that since Wolfgang with his gym stuff and mighty / mini transformation has way more animations I'd have to readjust then Maxwell has. So if I adjust more survivors (basically I would if i followed through adjust everyone to the cartoony headcanon size / proportions I imagine, aside Wilson who I would only give maybe almost unnoticeable longer legs arms since to me is the standard. Which would be the easiest for Wendy and Webber and Wurt who I would only make smaller (Wurt a little taller due to her species) since I consider their proportions perfect for their age. But it would be a struggle for every other character especially Walter and Willow who I think are supposed to be more teenager but probably similar in size to Wilson so I wouldn't be too sure whether to adjust them at all or make such tiny differences that they would be even less noticeable then the tiny stretch for wilson's limps I'd have in mind? I'm unsure about that. With everyone else it would once again mean the same approach as for Maxwell using the ESC template to redraw their sprites into more or less new proportions versions (less extreme than for Maxwell) and then adjust as many animations as necessary like I currently do for Maxwell.

IN CASE I EVER DO THIS it will probably take me years and there is no guarantee I would ever finish this project, mainly because I myself only ever play DST with Wilson or Maxwell and therefore wouldn't even see much of the other guys in game which can easily take away my motivation for such a big project.

Anyway now I will continue to focus on Maxwell, refine his animations and sprites once again and then take a long break from this. I just took a note here that technically it would be a nice idea since I DID have it in mind for a long time for the other characters as well, but unlikely for me to actually go through the hell of doing it. But one never knows. It's always good to write down some creative ideas.

The way you draw Maxwell is actually so cool I love it sm:wilson_flower:

Thanks :') I just wish I could take the time to make a REAL drawing in my non-simplified style, but currently I am unable to focus on anything in that direction.

Oooh, I love the way you draw Maxwell! The style really suits him! :D

And best of luck with the game mod and the adjustments!!!

Thanks x) So far the gameplay is almost finished. But the animation will probably take twice as long as I've already worked on that but for my own enjoyment it will probably be worth it at the end.

Basically the shape I WANTED Maxwell's body to look like in my mod, but that I can't work with for now. (that's why he is still wearing his placeholder clothes in my current mod version.)

This is only a lineart for the front view pose, because I was too stressed today to draw this for every sprite. But as you see, my original idea was completely different then the silly clothes he's currently wearing. I will adjust the character art bit by bit, as soon as I am done with the other work I have to do for the mod.

If you wonder why I haven't made something like this from the beginning: I have actually made 10 different character design drafts to make his sprites fit together during his animation, but all of them caused the Rayman syndrom (dismembered body parts), so this is why I drew him with the weird clothes above to prevent most weird animation dismembering errors for until I have finished most of the non-art parts of the mod.

Anyway at the end he should look closer to THIS: (the winter pelt part is necessary to stay or else his head is FLOATING)

So I started doodling around some time this day and sadly got distracted by being trapped in the hell of overthinking and now got back to this.

I will leave it this way, since I don't feel like colouring or shading (that could easily end up ruining it, considering how tired I am)

Also this represents the ACTUAL size difference I picture between Wilson and Maxwell. (actually every survivor to me has a unique size)

As an explanation: This is the first time ever I have drawn Wilson. And this was inspired by a fancy Wilson fanart I saw earlier. Yes I know Wilson should put on a shirt but the spontanous idea I had when starting to doodle sadly requires him to look like he just freshly groomed himself and now stretching after a good night sleep. (sometimes I just don't want them to suffer. This is intended to be set on a calm morning in a longterm rather safe base. Also I like Wilson looking extra-fluffy)

To explain what Maxwell is doing in this doodle: He is biting his tongue and clearing his throat wondering what on earth just went into him that made him say:

"Say pal you look quite good, you better hide THIS away when night comes!" (literally questioning his opinion of Higgsburry)

(Wilson didn't hear it, he's been too busy ruffling his hair with his fingers and yawning)

Currently taking a break at my workplace I just wanted to write down how much I WISH I didn't have several non-fanart commissions going on for customers / have to do several copies of sheep figurines, because right now I'd totally have a specific idea for a woodwork Wilson that I sadly can't create at home.

Too bad there currently is no place in my tight schedule at work to reserve some hours / days for ANOTHER one of my own plans.

(writing this down in case I can come back to this Wilson idea when I have to work less on woodwork / pyrography pieces for customers and my own sheep stuff)

Idea: woodmosaic (small and long pieces) for wilson hair, Wilson face made with pyrography. Style: rather simple silhouette-cartoony on flat wooden plate. Size around DIN-A 4 if bigger plate avaible.

added plan so I don't forget the details

Yay I found time to start working on this guy ^ (wood wilson)

(not posting a wip since this is very experimental since I usually only create animals in that woodwork / pyrography style)

(I'll post the finished version, but definitely not going to be able to finish him today)

My Wilson wall(?) decoration is almost done \o/ I'm so excited to finish him on monday (just some details on the woodmosaic hair left to do, let's hope no new commissions get announced / ordered inbetween) Best workplace is the one, where you can do your own crafts inbetween the breaks, especially when it's also fanart that you can tell the others about without them being weirded out by the plenty of fandoms (and other obsessions) you constantly come up with ideas for.

EDIT: I am surprised how I much faster and more focused I can work on my artisan crafts at work whenever I have skipped some days of sleep but as soon as I come home my brain turns into a chaotic, anxious mess. ....Wilson didn't help to make me tired, sadly, only even MORE energetic and unable to get rest. Suppose now I can shift to my computer workplace and hope exhaustion kicks in sooner or later.

The finished Wilson craft I made during breaks at work, with a simplified style that I considered fitting to go along with the wood-mosaic wilson hair idea (that's going to be one of my future flat's room decoration)

Turned out a bit asymetrical but it's ok for a first artisan craft / pyrography attempt at Wilson in a style different than my usual style for humanoid cartoon character art.

20240729_151855.jpg

I just noticed some of the wooden mosaic pieces fell off that would have covered the missing bits in the hair....probably during carrying him home, but it's ok, I won't fix those mistakes since I actually don't mind the bit of chaos this added to the finished Wilson. Just in case someone wants to let me know there there are gaps in his hair.

That is so cool and unique, and wood is such a perfect material for anything Don't Starve! (how many logs in this recipe?) I kind of want to touch his hair to feel the texture. :D

And I find it perfectly fitting for Wilson to be a bit wonky / asymmetrical, with pieces missing. Just captures him that much more accurately - especially after he's spent some time in the wilderness.

You have a great work place, it's cool to see your DS side projects. Thanks for sharing! ^^

The "logs" in this recipe were around 7 twigs (thin and thick mixed) as far as I can remember ^^ At least for the hair part. And yush he feels so perfect :D I had to "pet" his hair also a hundred times already, Wilson the perfect stimming toy. xP I'm also glad I sometimes have a little time at work and free access to all material and the machines to be allowed to work on random side projects even though I most of the time have to keep them tiny and simple like this one, but you're right it quite fits the Wilson, probably more then if I made a wall decoration Wilson from a different material. ACTUALLY I also wanted to have him have a wood-mosaic beard because I love bearded Wilson the most, but I noticed I couldn't find a base plate tall enough to also fit the beard part on it so I made the design for "standard" Wilson instead.

Final design reference for my custom Maxwell character mod:

(just front view so far. requires z-layer changes, not sure how to manage to adapt animations to this. Can't adapt all animations, so Maxwell will look really weird during e.g. boat rowing because the "tailcoat" (= skirt) layer will cover his lower body in the wrong layer. If anyone happens to know how to change the rowing animation in particular in-game please tell me ^^ I wasn't able to find it inside the SG.)

forgot to attach Maxwell reference

Wexford (WX human past form, passes male due to social pressure in my AU (though often mistakenly called "Miss" by Wagstaff) but is partial androgene insensitive intersex and prefers to not be assigned a gender identity at all. Winona/sometimes also Wagstaff calls them Wex) and their perfect creation. (WX78 design in my AU) Wex wants to merge with their creation so badly to escape society, one of their main source of pain and trauma.

(Not yet aware that they are going to replace their over-stimulated "empathy" module in human form with one they are going to damage to make it disrupted and malfunctioning on purpose in their robot form to get rid of a critical weakness, ... at the cost of losing access to most of their past's memories.)

(Wex kind of has a weird hairstructur because my brain can never decide between curly/wavy and partly straight so my imagination always ends up giving them this mix here.

I also know the eyes are creepily large but that's my exeggeration of features and drawn on purpose c: They are a small person with big eyes. (bit taller then Wilson. More like 1,55m small [Wilson is 1,52m]. They are also rather young looking and sounding despite being around 36 years old. (A bit older then Wilson, since nobody keeps aging after coming to this place. Usually they would be older then him if they didn't end up in this dreadful place.) [Very disphoric about their voice and prefers the robot's audio module's tone. Speaks more as WX then ever before.]
