Custom hand item appears in the wrong place when equipped

I'm trying to learn how to create custom hand items, using the Spear as a base in pretty much every way. It functions as expected, but I cannot wrap my head around the sprite. I've been able to get the sprite to appear in game, but for some reason the character holds it by the air above the tip? I don't know how I would test the held animations for the item in Spriter. When opening the scml file in Spriter, only the idle state is displayed, which correctly displays my custom sprite (swap_sharpstick-8), although in game the dropped sprite goes back to being a normal spear?
