Burning bernie buff suggestions

I feel like it should be a no brainer that you could use the Fire staff (and as an extension the fire pen) to light Bernie on fire, but...... you can't.

Also, to help cut down the cost of Burning Bernie, could his affinities count as a Bernie perk? It really doesn't make sense why it doesn't. It would also be great if he was given an indicator of when his fire would extinguish, like a sound cue.
