Plant Families - A Quick Explanation

In order to become giant, a plant must be close to 3 other plants of the same type. I've seen a lot of people confused exactly how close they need to be, so I made this quick guide.

To put it as simply as possible, each plant needs 3 others of the same type within a radius of 1 tile from the plant. This doesn't mean all the crops need to be in the same tile, though.

This plant has 3 others in the radius:

This plant has 1 of the plants slightly outside the radius:

Basically, the easiest way to keep all your plants in a family is to plant them in a row like this:

But there are other ways to plant them. Here are some that can produce at least one giant (with different till patterns):
