so, i have been playing dst for 3 years now and in that three years there have been several mods to make the world smaller; as it stands dst  has updates  that changes how and with what the world generates which makes these small-world mods defunct and either the mod will be eventually updated or 1-3 other mods will take its place in the upcoming months as players find out it has become unplayable. this is not really ideal but it is how it has been and for enough users it has been fine BUT this does mean that hundreds of hours of work can be lost simply because someone got tired or tired of the game

 

long and short of it there feels like there is room for klei to officially make an option to reduce down the world size without it causing too much harm. like with lights-out it doesn't need to be a feature-complete option only a stable one and could even come with a warning that it is not for 'regular' play or may have unknown issues if the user messes about with it too much. i know it can be done without removing any features up to and including the second-to-last major update, i've seen several people do it and while i got out of the modding game around the end of 2021 because i couldnt keep pace i did, for a little while manage it myself with some help from veteran dst modders. it would make it so people running on potatoes(like me), people who play with people from other parts of the world(also like me), people who enjoy and use the "lots/tonnes" option when making worlds(like me) and console players(not so much like me) suffered less lag, less kicks and just had a more compact and concise place to play. my best world and my longest-term world was over 1300 days and i adore it so much that even now i refuse to delete it even though i havent been able to play it in months and may never get to play it again. it was a third the size of the smallest vanilla world but i never ran out of things to do and i still pine for it even now(rip world with 1 in 3 of all the ornaments and a fully decorated palm oasis that only got used a few days out of the year because i am a cave junkie at heart)

 

i understand the replies here will probably run mostly along 'get a better computer' or 'get better at mods and go back to making them' but even so i still wish to implore the team to consider it in the way they've considered so many of the quality-of-life options that have kept me playing through 2k hours and counting
