Critique of Wilson's Update

Recommended Posts

I'm not a fan of the recent Wilson's update in Don't Starve Together. While the addition of skill trees seems to increase his playability, in reality, it's not necessary for Klei to buff Wilson directly through the skill trees. For example, Wilson can throw torches, his beard provides better warmth and food storage, and he has unique alchemy structures that are more beneficial than the skill tree additions. Additionally, looking at the update content, if I were a Wilson player, I would only assign two skill points to alchemy. Many of the alchemy options are too expensive, and experienced players can easily obtain many materials. Furthermore, the beard and torch are better choices for survival players.

Moreover, it seems like Klei is rekindling their interest in shadow creatures, and I'm glad that they're finally returning to the main storyline. DST should focus on adding more terrains and technology trees, rather than continuously adding unnecessary items. After so many updates, I'm still left with a ham bat as my primary weapon.

It seems like the update was meant to appeal to people who liked Wilson as he was, and those who wanted a bit more/ could use a bit of training wheels in the form of perks for new player issues such as light, resources and winter/ inventory management with the food space I suppose.

Its a good rework for the two groups, those who are still learning or are new, and those who just liked Wilson which is fair.

But unfortunately, It may have been a bit too much to ask for more than that, I mean if Wilson suddenly becomes some unrivaled beast of a character, it would kind of detract from the point of him in the first place. A person who picks Wilson either loves that character, or they just want to experience the game with out short cuts or strange advantages.

As much as I would love to have to have some crazy perk or abilities (any thing mad science/experiment oriented would be amazing) realistically, I would be very surprised if he changed any more than a few adjustments to his alchemy or the shadow perks.

(and yes it would be nice to have some new weapons, admittedly there are some options, but most are just clubs that you wack stuff with...)
