Joe Dee
I haven't noticed this information anywhere, so I'm putting it here in case people actually didn't know. For breeding new variants of critters, it doesn't matter the amount of calories they eat of the required food, what matters is how often they eat it. Therefore the smaller chunks you can feed them, the less food you need to max out the chance of the right egg. For instance, a royal bug can get to 98% coral bug chance with less than half a loaf of pepper bread fed crumb by crumb, whereas feeding whole loaves it might eat 5 of them and still only have 75% chance. So how do we do this? There wasn't a practical way to actually feed crumbs until the recent introduction of the Conveyor Meter. Set to 10 grams each, and using a weight plate with some logic, the food comes out in tiny crumbs and even a wild critter will spend most of its time eating them one by one and boosting the egg chance each time. Even just keeping them on this feeder for one cycle is enough, and then you can move the critters elsewhere to feed on cheaper, neutral food that doesn't affect their egg laying. This is actually required for tame critters since 10 grams every few seconds is generally not enough to keep them from starving. Otherwise another disadvantage is that you need one of these feeders per critter, because they will keep monopolizing it and no other critters get a chance to reach the food. lich46
No, that only happens for shine bugs. Hatchs and other creatures are not the case. Spoiler
