Tallbird farms

Recommended Posts

I Have always enjoyed making efficient resources farms in DST. I have slowly over time setup ways in my world to farm close to everything, be that bosses or resources. I however never did get around to making a tallbird farm. With the changes to tallbirds and their eggs it seems time set one up.

I Understand the basics. Burn nests and telelocator tallbirds, and or hatch them from eggs, set up a pen of walls or statues, and use catapult or houndius shootius to kill the tallbirds, if you want them for meat.

I am wondering if anyone has more tips or helpful information beyond that. Like how many can fit in a normal area? are there tricks to spacing out their nests? Or do you just drop them in a pen and let them figure it out? Are there good ways to bait them away from me so I can get the eggs out of the pen with out killing them?

There just does not seem to be much out there on this sadly. Be that videos or other information. So hopefully someone knows a bit more about this around here.

I am also interested if anyone has found a good use for tallbirds for other things now that we can move them. I figure since they will go after a lot of mobs, and don't steal drops off the ground. While also being pretty tough. There are probably some funny new things they could be used for.

Perhaps bringing an egg and hatching it underground and starting a herd in the caves could be useful for summer. Just an idea I had.
I also think you could use it to kill Toadstool or at least weaken it by putting tons of tall bird nests near it's spawn and let them peck the crap out of it.

Oh definitely. I usually set up at least a smaller version of everything I can in the caves. That fact that we can take them down there now is fantastic.

So far i have moved the nests slightly closer to Mac Tusk huts and walled them in together.

i can share some tips with you if you really wanna know how to ranch tallbird easily.

First you have to understand how tallbirds works, they are really agressive mobs, but they usually dont go that far away from their nest.

The best way to ranch tallbirds in early game is to make a pen for each bird, you are gonna need to make a square of 6 x 6 walls or fences, just like this one:

You have to be really careful tallbirds make good damage, always use armor. And never try to put more than 2 tallbirds in the same pen, thats a bad idea.

If you wanna have tallbirds really early you have to burn the nest and aggro the tallbird all the way to the pen.20221026111621_1.thumb.jpg.5bb7e9ca65fcd5e83274a3b9df58bde4.jpgy

You can make some pens early game but remeber just one tallbird per pen, this is cause two reason, first, one tallbird is hard to put in a pen, two tallbirds are almost impossible. Before you know about the second reason you have to understand how this pens works.

Thats right we are gonna be using a mob (in this case a rabbit) to distract the tallbird, we are gonna make a little cage for the rabbit and it has to be 3 fences aways form the tallbird cause you know those stupid birds have a big range of attack. And of course while he is distracted we are gonna steal the egg. easy as that.

and now you can understand why is not good idea to put more than one tallbird per pen, the second reason is cause the random nature of the tallbird, they can be distracted by the rabbit for a moment but eventually they give up and return to their nest and that can be dangerous, if you are near their egg and they suddenly lose aggro on the rabbit you are gonna be the next target. Imagine yourself trying to get all the eggs from a big pen with 5 tallbirds and only one door, suddenly one or two tallbirds lose the aggro on the rabbit while you are picking up the eggs... is a lot safer to just make individual pens.20221026113450_1.thumb.jpg.49b443e4d311d65d3ddc9c4f8c6630e9.jpg

You can choose to make the pens larger=safer. And thats it. this is my fav way to ranch tallbird at least during early game, i always do this in klei servers. Hope it has been usefull to you. :) oh and always try to make a tail of three cats whip.

If you're using walls to block them, the pen needs to be 2x2 turf tiles minimum, or they won't make a nest. Also, if you're growing a lot from eggs, you need to be very careful on the final stage. They love to kill the other teen birds as soon as they grow up. What I did is take note of the day they turn into teen birds, and make mini pens in my larger one. You can break a wall and feed them, then repair one by one if they get hungry.

I wasn't aware of the 2x2 tile pen at the time, but it doesn't matter if you don't really care where they set up nests. Just break a wall down, let them set up their nests, kill them all and hammer the walls.

I plan to add some houndius protected by statues around the middle later for easy killing and egg gathering.

Thanks for the heads up about the teen birds killing each other.
