Some Ideas to Make DST Ocean Fishing More Fun.

Recommended Posts

In my opinion ocean fishing is simply not worth the time and effort. It is a very convoluted process that only gives you a new source of fish meat and a new source of rot. Sure you get fish meat instead of fish morsels but that's not really big of a reward. Following are some of the ideas i came up with that can make fishing in open ocean more fun:

1-) Alternative Methods of Fishing

In real life fishing rods are usually used to fish as a hobby. To gather industrial amounts of Fish, Fishing Nets are utilised. Fish Net can be crafted using 12 rope and prototyped in a Tackle Receptacle. It could be attached to the boat and if you row over a school of fish, it would capture them and store them within itself. It can capture up to 20 small fish or 4 huge fish before it becomes full and needs to be reeled in. It can be used up to 4 times this way before it breaks and some of the items used to make it floats to the water surface. It can be repaired using a sewing kit.

Another Option can be the Floating Nest which is crafted using 4 Malbatross Feathers, 6 driftwood and 5 rot. It spoils overtime instead of decreasing in durability and the amount of fish it can catch is proportional to how fresh the nest is. At top freshness it can catch twice that of a fish net. It can be deployed on the ocean like a trap and fish will swim inside it.

2-) Deep Sea Fishes

Fishing on Rough or Hazardous waters should give additional rewards. Thats why when fishing during full moons in this biomes,There is a chance for fish from the depths of the ocean to surface when you throw your line or net. These fishes(such as anglers, viperfishes and deep sea eels as well as giant isopods) will try to fight back by biting you and try to waddle back to water.

They can drop murky fish meat which counts both as a fish food and monster food item and can be used to cook two new recipes: Anko Nabe(2 murky fish meat, 1 vegetables, 1 honey) which heals for 40 health, fills for 20 hunger and restores 55 sanity as well as Ankimo(1 murky fish meat, 2 vegetables, 1 filler except twigs) which heals for 20 health, fills for 55 hunger and restores 30 sanity.

Deep sea fishes can drop additional rewards like gems, shell fragments, or new items related to fishing.

3-) Explosive Fishing

Nets are not the only alternatives for better fishing methods. Using four boards, 2 gunpowder and 3 cut stone, player could craft a cannon. Cannon can use various things as ammo such as spears, tentacle spikes, chum buckets, as well as three different cannonballs. Spears and tentacle spikes wont do anything if they hit the water but if they hit enemies on land, they do triple damage on the cost of double durability use. Chum will deploy a huge area of chum that will attract fishes from far and wide but if it hits land, it will explode into 8 rot without damaging anything.

First cannonball is the regular cannonball crafted using 3 cut stone and 2 gunpowder. Cannonball deals an area of effect damage similar to Wagstaffs thumpers, dealing 200 damage in a 2.5 unit radius and 50 damage to anything up to 6 units radius as well as uprooting and destroying all plants and buildings.

Second cannonball is the black pearl which can be obtained from sunken chests. Black pearl is lighter and goes for a further distance. It also spawns shadow tentacles when it hits which deal additional damage and can be reused up to 25 times before breaking.

Thuleball is crafted using 4 thulecite and 1 purple gem. It can be reused 75 times and has a radius of 6 units where it deals 300 damage and 12 unit radius where it deals 100 damage.

If any of the above cannonballs are thrown into water, they will cause 4 large waves and will make a bunch of unfortunate dead fishes float to surface. except for black pearl, they would be lost if they hit water.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. These are some of my ideas on how to make fishing in the ocean a bit more fun. What are yours? Feedback is appreciated.
