rgduck Posted September 5, 2021 Share Posted September 5, 2021 The decor penalty from heavy-watt wire is insane. At -22.5 with a range of 6 tiles, it beats nearly every other element in the game. And the math is even worse than those numbers suggest, because you get a heavi-watt penalty from every one cell in range, while you can only build a masterpiece painting every two cells. Thematically, here's what's going on: Player: Mind if I build some electrical wiring here? Dupe: Sure, that's no problem. P: Also I'm gonna leave these bottles of piss lying around. D: Eh, I can live with that. P: Is it cool if the wiring is a bit thicker? D: Oh... um, is it highly conductive wiring? P: No. D: AAAHH! get it away from me! P: Gosh... sorry about that. What if I put some world-class art nearby? D: NO!! Oh my god! The wires! The thick, non-conductive wires!! I realize there are ways to overcome the heavy-watt decor penalty. I can hide the wires, compensate with statue floors, substitute gold conductive heavy-watt wires, etc. But all of this feels gimmicky. It feels like I'm not really trying to make my dupes happy, only trying to outsmart the devs. In practice, the heavi-watt penalty just makes me ignore decor until at least mid-game. Why bother, when -10,000 decor is no worse than -1 decor, and when other means of boosting morale are easier than replacing my heavi-watt? If the goal is to disincentivize the use of heavy-watt wire, that makes sense to me, but I suggest doing it in a different way. Maybe make heavi-watt require more resources, or more time to build, or have it malfunction from time to time, or make dupes trip over it... or something else that doesn't moot the decor system.
