Custom item image does not appear on character select screen?

I've seen this happen to multiple mods, but I don't see any discussions about it on the forums.  Sometimes custom item images will not appear on the character select screen.  Does anyone know why this is?  (I'm currently looking through a mod I know of where the custom images do appear on the select screen.)

Update:  I think I might have figured it out.  I dropped it into my ModMain and it just seems to work.  It will also not conflict with other items or starting inventory configurations.

TUNING.STARTING_ITEM_IMAGE_OVERRIDE["cheapbirdtrap"] = {atlas = "images/inventoryimages/cheapbirdtrap.xml", image = "cheapbirdtrap.tex"}
