The way it could work is that it simply adds another check to the launch checklist, if the port is connected and the signal is red you the rocket could not be launched until it's changed to green. This could make things like ensuring a minimum of food, oxygen pressure or any other automatable process is completed before the rocket is marked as ready to launch.
