Cannot play DST

Recommended Posts

I got a small update for don't starve together a few days ago and I installed it. After I installed it steam gave me a message saying "corrupt game files" I tried multiple solutions before finally breaking down and uninstalling the game and reinstalling it. After reinstalling the game the message changed to "game files locked" I tried restarting my pc and starting steam as admin. This did nothing for it. I have looked online and tried to contact steam support. I have over 600 hours in don't starve together so I can't get a refund from steam. I cannot backup the game files to an older version because the game is stuck updating. I tried verifying the game files before uninstalling and after reinstalling. I am truly lost and just want to play this beta... I played it for like 2 days before this update problem.

Generally the "content file locked" issue occurs when there is something conflicting with Steam's process of trying to read/write to your hard drive. Please ensure that your Windows User Account has the proper permissions/administrative permissions to be able to write or save files to the hard drive.

Windows 10: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-check-if-your-windows-10-account-is-administrator/

You can also try running Steam and the game as an Administrator:
- Fully close out of Steam and restart your computer.
- After restarting your computer, right-click on the Steam icon > select "Run as Administrator"
- Try launching the game after you have administrator access.

How to run Don't Starve Together as an Administrator:
- Try running Don't Starve Together's executable file ( dontstarve_steam.exe ) as an administrator in your game folders (Steam\steamapps\common\Don't Starve Together\bin\dontstarve_steam.exe)
- Right-click on it and select "Run as Administrator"

Should the issue persist after trying the above troubleshooting steps, please see this Steam thread on Reddit as it has a plethora of possible solutions, ranging from running as admin to running chkdsk because of file system corruption https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/5cnjzf/content_file_locked/

Steam Support will also be able to provide you with more in-depth troubleshooting steps if you contact them via https://help.steampowered.com/
