Plants and Crops

We have plants that grow up, and down, why not sideways?
This would require making farming tiles rotate to face sideways.

Lichen would be a good one to line the walls with, although I'm not sure what game effect it would have other than decor.
I  believe they are both an animal life form and a plant (algae?). Might be edible? Reduce Co2 levels?
Maybe someone who knows more about the life cycles of lichen could volunteer some ideas.

Another crop/food plant might be something that grows out horizontally like a branch and bares fruit.

A way to covert reed fibers into a filtration medium.
Cellulose Fiber is already used in pool filtration today.

Or perhaps just a different growable filtration medium
