TheFriday Posted December 18, 2014 Share Posted December 18, 2014 Hello, I'm Friday. I'm new to this community. I really enjoy Don't Starve and DST! I've been trying to make custom content with very minimal success. I made this thread in hopes someone could help me. I have a very limited experience with coding/scripting. I can read something and have a general idea of what it does, but I cannot write it. I've been trying to the best of my ability to learn and understand all the things that go into creating a custom character in Don't Starve, and I just cannot get the hang of it. I always run into something that makes the character unusable. I've used several tutorials from this site. Including TheDanaAddams' guide here;http://tinyurl.com/ngxnwxc And tried to the best of my ability to use Dleowolf's Extended Sample Character Template here;http://tinyurl.com/kaadsz3 Although different, they are both super useful! But I am still unable to create a working character. Right now the issue I have is that when I launch Don't Starve and start a world with my character (after successfully enabling it), once it loads and should start the game it instead closes. Presuming this is a crash, I have no idea what is triggering or causing it. I have Don't Starve Mod Tools installed and enabled on my Steam account, so every time I launch the game it does it's thing. I utterly have no idea what it really does or what I can do with it.(Other than it compiling some files automatically which is super useful) I apologize that I'm inexperienced, and I am really open to any help that I can receive. BrotatoTips Posted December 18, 2014 Share Posted December 18, 2014 can you launch the game and replicate the crash and then post the log.txt file from your documents folder?the directory location is pc/documents/klei/donotstarve/log.txti had this error and ill look at my post of what i fixed and then look at your log and see if its a similar issue. BrotatoTips Posted December 18, 2014 Share Posted December 18, 2014 hmm. i looked at what was wrong with mine. have you renamed your builds and made sure that it was all lowercase except for the parts that requires capitals? what was wrong with mine was i named my characters prefab name as Cbk, and when i changed it to cbk, it fixed it oddly. if anything, Mobbstar probably knows alot about some of these issues. also since you are working with the extended template, you could also try talking to DragonDePlatino. i work with the outdated sample character mod, and DragonDePlatino would be able to assist you much further. what is your characters name and their abbreviation? and i noticed you tried something with dapperness? could you attach your prefab file so that i may see if you have any errors that stick out to me. Without changing any names of files or directories, I changed some prefabs and artwork. Other than that, I don't remember changing anything at all. I feel like if I were to come right out and ask certain people for help as I am so new to the forums and/or community it would be more trouble to them. I would like to not annoy anyone. From what I can assess "Dapperness" is a level in which you gain sanity back over time. Maxwell uses this, and his level is set at 20. He gains sanity pretty steadily. I have made no changes to the dapperness component, just tried to use it in the character. BrotatoTips Posted December 18, 2014 Share Posted December 18, 2014 looking again at your log it says thisMiniMapComponent::AddAtlas( ../mods/extended sample character/images/map_icons/esctemplate.xml )...ded sample character/scripts/prefabs/esctemplate.lua:58: attempt to index field 'dapperness' (a nil value)LUA ERROR stack traceback:what this means is dapperness in your character file returned a nil value. i had an issue like this similar to this when working with DST compatability. try setting a number besides 0 to the dapperness. if you plan to keep it at 0, then you can just remove this line of code since its pretty much filler without it effecting anything. im not sure this is what breaks your character, but sometimes the code is odd. ive had some odd stuff fix my code too tell me if changing that number to greater than 0 fixes it at all. I'm still not sure what the Don't Starve Mod Tools does (other than auto-compiling) but nevertheless thank you.
