Ancient key vanished

I set out for the atrium and my key seems to have vanished. It had been down in the caves by some stairs. I spent like an hour digging up burrows and burning down mushrooms like a mad man trying to find it but no luck. I am not sure if this is a bug or if there is another explanation but it is very frustrating. Any thoughts?
