I'm guessing this is a GPU lockup, because it's almost always that taking away all access save for the Magic SysReq Key. What I'd like from Klei today is a renderdoc or equivalent capture of the research screen so I can test the Mesa drivers in a controlled environment.
Take a look at line 31 in the attached syslog.txt file, interesting huh.
I can usually play, but sometimes while in the Research tree screen I'll get a lockup. Things that don't work include, ctrl-alt-backspace (should kill the current Xorg server), switching to another VC, forcing-fb is disabled(I don't know why or even what this would do), SAK should also kill the current Xorg server https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/SAK.txt
Things that do work, Alt-PrtSc-(s, u, b) sync filesystems, unmount filesystems, and reboot to UEFI respectively. This is how I got a clean copy of the error message from syslog.
Be viewing the Research dialog.
