Game crashing before menu appears

Brand new install of ONI on a brand new laptop, and I can't get to the menu :(.

Steps to Reproduce
Download steam. Install steam. Install ONI on steam. Click it twice. Wait. Game crashes to desktop before menu appears (all you see is the Klei logo).
Go to bugs

I think I may have stumbled into a real bug, as I just found a solution that makes very little sense: disabling the steam overlay.  Viola.
