Doops Give Up, Get Stuck on Ladder

Day 558 - About 30 days ago I noticed something was starting to go wrong with my doops when they would spend an entire day climbing to the bottom of a ladder picking something up, then climbing to the top, dropping it, and then repeating the process over and over until it was time for bed. Then wake up and start all over again.

Then, suddenly the doops have given up delivering lumber to the generators. There is a full container of lumber right next to the generators, the priority is set to yellow, and the doops are just wondering around the base in idle mode. They'll stand right on top of the generator and do nothing. Every now and then they get a priority and then they just give up. The priority list on each doop flickers tasks around but then they just give up and stand there.

Would seem my saved game is screwed. At this point if I keep trying to play they'll just die. Screenshot attached. I would like to include my save file but it's not in the location mentioned below. I'm guessing because the save file goes to steam cloud it's saved somewhere else?

Steps to Reproduce

Difficult to reproduce, but I did notice that it started very early in the game. Maybe day 50 - 100. Doops would start ignoring priority tasks. Or take 3+ days to finish building very simple structures that had priority set to 9.

You have your gen set to "Deliver lumber when battery is lower than 60". But battery is higher. So gen doesnt create errand to deliver. Also if your smart battery set to 60% too it make death circle: battery drop below 60, dupes get errand to deliver, battery switch on other gens, charge grow above 60, errand canceled. Dupes running here and there by continuous errands that they dont have time to do.

So there is no bug, all works intended. You need to change your generator room. On this stage of the game its better to use Auto-sweeper to deliver lumber. Or change thresholds on gen and batteries

Hi Asurendra,

Firstly, thank you for your reply and for taking the time. Unfortunately, after much testing I do not think the issue is with automation. I've already tested this, but for the sake of  a screenshot I did it again. I removed all automation wires and let the doops do their own thing for 3 days with the priority set to 9. The doops found the most obscure, low priority tasks to do instead and refused to fill the lumber generator.

I was able to access my saved game file and have included it as a link below. Hopfully this doesn't break any Klei forum rules as it is larger than the maximum upload size allowed. Also find below a screenshot. Love to hear your thoughts on what's going on.

Follow up to my own reply. I "Fixed" the issue. Well, I fixed the issue with this one particular bug I was experiencing. "No lumber" message really stuck with me because I have 18 tonnes of lumber... and then it hit me, the doops can't get it out of the storage unit. I don't know why, but they can't. So I dumped the lumber out of the storage unit and they all came rushing to load the generators!

But why.. why couldn't they access the storage unit. They could enter the room. It's not a smart storage unit. What happened?

UPDATE: That worked for about 5 minutes and the've gone back to ignoring the generators again. I've built a sweeper to do the task instead, but the sweeper is also ignoring the generators. Am I missing something here?

Send Lumbers inside with the conveyor-loader->conveyor rail. Fill with Auto Sweeper and Lock Door.
Coal and Wood Generators Need to be Updated and Improved.

  • Fill Type: Only AutoSpweepers Or Only Dup's.
  • Automation 2. Enable/Disable Fill Option

Maybe they'll see it with your report and fix it.

Hey there, Lexgear! Sounds like quite a headache.

What does the "errand" tab say for the wood generator when it is out of fuel? Is it empty, or does it flicker between different dupes at a somewhat regular interval? I'm pretty sure the "missing lumber" isn't telling you that you have no lumber available, but rather that that particular building it doesn't have any in it's internal storage. I think so, as the in-game symbol for a resource that you don't have at all (as opposed to the building just lacking a it) is a little red pop-up below the building.

Is the errand getting assigned to a dupe and then assigned to a new one when the first dupe "gives up" on the ladder? I.e. are your dupes able to access the generator and wood storage without running out of breath on their way there? I see there's a mix of mostly unbreathable gases present. The behavior you're describing with dupes stuttering on the ladder makes it sound like they're running out of oxygen on the way to pick up/deliver lumber, and with that many dupes idle, as soon as one gives up to go catch their breath, a new dupe will try to take over the errand, keeping it reserved so the auto sweeper can't get the chance to deliver the lumber.

Fortunately, this is fairly straightforward to test. Is the autosweeper still refusing to deliver lumber if you restrict access to the area with the wood generator so no dupes can path there? If it starts working when dupes are unable to reserve/attempt the delivery errand, I think this is actually intended behavior.

If you want to prevent the dupes and the autosweeper fighting for errands, the solution suggested by HagenAizen is a surefire way of preventing it. Or, you can supply the area with oxygen, or provide the dupes with masks/suits to prevent them running out of breath on the way there, if that's what is going on.
