Crash to desktop when loading saved game

Man in the Mist
  • Branch: Live Branch Version: Windows Pending

When loading a saved game using today's QoL branch, the game will crash after the map loads.  The user will unable to interact with any elements before the crash pane appears.  This occurs even after verifying files.

Switching to the previous update branch allows the game to load with no errors.

0. Have a saved game from before today's QoL update.
1. Update to today's QoL build then launch the game.
2. From the main menu select Load Game then a saved game.
3. Observe what happens once the map loads.

Expected: The map and all elements load with no errors.
Actual: Microsoft crash mini-pane appears, giving you the option to end the program.

User Feedback

Hello there,

Based on your log and description, the crash after the latest Quality of Life (QoL) update is almost certainly caused by outdated or incompatible mods. The log shows multiple errors and warnings about mod versions, missing content, and failed loads, which strongly suggests several mods haven’t been updated for the new game version yet.

Here’s a step-by-step way to fix it, starting with the most reliable methods:

1. Clean Up Your Mods (Pick One Option)

You don’t have to do both of these. Start with one of them:

Option A – Disable all mods in-game (quick test):
This is the fastest way to check if the crash is mod-related.
  • Launch Oxygen Not Included.
  • Go to the Mods menu.
  • Use the button to disable all active mods.
  • Restart the game if prompted and try loading your save.
If the game stops crashing with all mods disabled, it confirms the issue is with one or more mods.

Option B – Delete the mods folder (full reset):
This is more thorough, and removes all installed mods from your local files.
  • Close the game completely.
  • Delete this folder:

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Klei\OxygenNotIncluded\mods

(Paste that into the Windows Explorer address bar and press Enter.)
  • The game will recreate this folder automatically when needed.

After deleting the folder, it’s a good idea to verify your game files:
  • Open your Steam Library.
  • Right-click Oxygen Not IncludedProperties.
  • Go to the Installed Files tab.
  • Click Verify integrity of game files….

Then launch the game (with no mods) and try loading your save.

2. Re-add Mods Slowly (One by One)

Once the game runs fine without mods, you can start bringing them back carefully.

Check known problematic mods first:
From your log, mods like Mineralizer, Custom World Size, Half Door and Geyser Cracking are failing. Visit their Steam Workshop pages and see if they’ve been updated for the latest QoL build.

Check for updates and comments:
On each mod’s Workshop page, look for:
  • Recent updates mentioning compatibility with the current ONI version.
  • Comments from other players confirming whether it works or is broken right now.

Add mods back gradually:
  • Subscribe to one mod you want to use.
  • Launch the game and enable that single mod in the Mods menu.
  • Load your save and test.
  • If everything works: close the game, subscribe to the next mod, and repeat.
  • If the game crashes again: that mod is very likely the culprit. Disable it in-game, unsubscribe from it on the Workshop, and either wait for an update or look for an alternative.

3. If you get the “Restart – New Mods…” Loop

If the game keeps asking you to restart for “new mods” over and over:

– When the prompt appears, click Cancel instead of Restart.
– Quit Oxygen Not Included completely (and exit Steam if needed).
– Launch the game again and check the Mods screen.

This often breaks the loop and lets the game finish initializing the mods properly.

Hopefully this helps you get your colony running again without crashes.

I got this error after I had multiple mods need to be removed after they caused the game to crash.  The log was from the first time the map actually loaded instead of crashing while loading.

Furthermore, I just disabled all of my mods and attempting to load the map got me a "Help! A black hole ate my game!" crash message.  Log is attached.

That error is from the custom schedule block from Rest for the Weary. It must be removed before the mod can be disabled.

Re-enable Rest for the Weary.
