Changing the material of a grave will remove the occupying body

I had made a grave to honor the departed Pei who so valiantly ventured into a room at 100 degrees and had realized the grave was made from sandstone, I wanted to change the grave to obsidian being my scarcest resource at the time after the rebuild however, I was horrified to find the grave unoccupied.
