Shadow puppets don't follow Maxwell if he is too far from them while boating.

Spawn the shadow puppet, get on a boat and move away from them (by a lot). The shadow puppets will never appear close to maxwell, neither if you exit the boat and go step on the land, but they will eventually die from the 2.5 days cooldown they got.
