No Sound after Steam update

This happens after nearly every Steam update. My game no longer has sound of any kind. I tried to submit a bug report and got an error there too, so here I am.

If I have something playing in the background, when I load the game, all sound stops. If i have headphones in when I load the game, the in-game and background sounds work, but if I take the headphones out at any point, sound to the game gets dropped (but not the background sounds).

My usual method of "fixing" this is to just not play the game for a few days and sometime randomly it will boot up just fine (and usually stay that way until another Steam update). I'm just really tired of this being the same bug for years now. Wish I had a consistent, effective fix.
