Mouse Acting On Its Own

  • DLC VERSION - IMPORTANT!: Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked, Hamlet Pending

Hi.

I'm coming in here because this is an issue I keep randomly having, have brought up before, and I'm over it. This time around, I've found multiple people complaining about the same issue to little response dating all the way back to 2014. Some from Reddit, some from Steam: This is a glitch that makes the game unplayable, as confirmed by multiple people, and it's still impossible to find a solution for it.

Randomly, Don't Starve will start acting like I'm clicking the mouse as soon as I open the game. In the main menu, I have to click on things twice to get them to register because it thinks I'm holding it down already. The character follows my mouse no matter where I point it and will randomly drop items if I grab them, or continue to add wood without stopping for example. This killed me on my newest run yesterday because it made me drop a torch. I cannot stress enough that I have no idea what's causing this and therefore cannot replicate it. I started a new run Sunday, worked fine, then opened it Monday to the glitch. In the past when this happened, I didn't fix it. It would just randomly stop and go back to normal.

I do not have anything attached to my laptop besides my mouse. The trackpad is permanently disabled. No controllers, no keyboard.

Things I have already tried:

Uninstalling/reinstalling

Restarting my laptop

Checking integrity of files

Disabled mods

Resetting to default settings

Unplugged mouse, plugged it back in

It's actually really disappointing that this has been reported for years to little fanfare. I basically can't play this game until it fixes itself. If anyone is out there who's experienced this glitch as well PLEASE comment! Especially if you have advice!

Also, please do not suggest 'just use the keyboard'. i am disabled and only use the mouse--there is no other option.

Thank you!

you said you don't have a keyboard attached, but try this anyway.

install Yet Another Key Displayer and see if the little box that displays the keys pressed keeps displaying something even when you're not pressing any keys. in my case it kept displaying "LShift, OemClear"
if it does then continue to the next step, if not, then sorry that I couldn't help you.

install SharpKeys and click Add, that'll open a window with 2 lists and each of them has a button named "Type Key", click the button below the left list and that'll open a window.
after a few seconds it should automatically type the key that's causing you problems. emphasis on should because I never met anyone else with this bug and I don't know if this will work for other people or not.
click Ok.
on the right list, scroll down and select "Num 5: (00_4C)", this is the Clear key, which does nothing unless you have numlock enabled as far as I know.
click Ok > Write to Registry > reboot your computer

check if that fixes your problem.
you can also try disabling the problem key by selecting "-- Turn Key Off (00_00)" on the right list, or setting it to one of the "Unknown" keys, but in my case that didn't fix the bug, only remapping it to Clear worked.
the side effect is that if you enable numlock, it'll automatically press 5 every 2 seconds, I hope that doesn't bother you much.
